In many ways, South Africas political, social and economic landscape has been dominated by mining, given that, for so many years, the sector has been the mainstay of the South African economy. Although gold, diamonds, platinum and coal are the most wellknown among the minerals and metals mined, South Africa also hosts chrome, vanadium, titanium and a number of other lesser minerals.
M M ining in South Africa has been a contentious issue since 15yearold Erasmus Stephanus Jacobs discovered South Africas first diamond, the Eureka, in Hopetown in 1867. It kickstarted what historians call the Mineral Revolution, which made few European opportunists wealthy beyond measure, and saw hundreds of thousands of men leaving their homes to become fulltime mineworkers.
South Africa (along with the USA) is out of step with other major mining countries, where public ownership of mineral rights has led to successful exploration and mining industries. Private ownership of mineral rights suppresses exploration activity as well as the opportunity for alternative views to be taken of the economics of mining an unexploited ore body.
All mining operations are built on limited mineral reserves. To keep the mining industry moving, as old mine projects are exhausted or closed, new ones are built. As of March 2019, 23 new African mining projects had been listed on AMIQ (Africa Mining IQ) for the 2019 calendar year.
